matthew kirkland tennessee power showcase home run derby 2009 representative

"I have been Matt's high school baseball coach for the last two years. Matt has started for us from the first day he set foot on our campus. His first year, our team was runner-up in the state of Tennessee in the highest classification. Matt started because his is very talented. His bat speed is as good as any high school player that I have coached or coached against. I saw him turn around a fastball that was clocked at 90 mph during our trip to Jacksonville. Some kids are born to hit, and Matt is one of those kids. Although Matt is primarily a line drive hitter, he has the ability to elevate the ball when he needs to. In our state tournament, he hit a couple of balls that not only left the yard in a flash, but they traveled an unbelievable distance. Some veteran observers of games at that park told me they had never seen a ball travel that far and that fast. His power is very impressive and he is one of the most feared hitters in our leagues. As a player Matt is just as impressive. He has a strong arm, and very soft hands. Matt pitches and plays 3rd base for us. His toughness makes him the best 3rd baseman in our league. he can make every play. His arm strength makes him one of the best right-handed pitchers in our league also. Matt is the total package. he can play for anybody. I've been blessed to be able to coach some very fine athletes. We have been fortunate to have several of our young men to go to a variety of universities and colleges. Matt Kirkland is as talented as anyone we have had. I very highly recommend him for the Power Showcase.
