2009 International High School
Power Showcase Home Run Derby
CALIFORNIA REPRESENTATIVE

josh leyland

Dear Coach Domenico and the Power Showcase Staff,
The Leyland family would first like to thank you for giving Josh the opportunity
to compete in the 2009 Power Showcase. This is an event that Josh will value
forever. Josh felt it was an honor to represent the state of California and to
be a part of this exciting event. Like most parents we were skeptical at the
invitation, but after speaking with others who had participated we knew this
would be a fun and life changing experience for Josh. Josh had a great experience
from the beginning, from the work out at Yankee training camp, to the dinner with
inspirational speakers and to the main event at Tropicana Field where he could compete with the top power hitters in the world. The Power Showcase has opened many doors for his success in his baseball career and built his confidence to a new level. We appreciate all the hard work that went into making this event so special and even after it was over the work that went into the professional photos that we received and the outstanding video that was shared around the world for Josh to keep and treasure forever. Thank you once again.

"Josh has played Varsity Baseball for me since his sophomore year.  His work ethic is second to none.  Last season we were on Josh constantly to do the little things correctly so he can become the player he is today.  He handled our criticism exceptionally well and continued to work hard becoming our teams leader on the field.  In the past, I have had players that couldn't handle the adversity and pressure when being constantly reminded of what they need to succeed.  Josh has grown into an extremely valuable player in our program that leads by his hard work and determination to be the best player on the field.  He recently hit three home runs in one game with 10 RBI.  The impressive thing was his pitch selection and patience that led to this awesome performance.  His approach at the plate has been that of a savvy veteran in college.  He has always had tremendous power and ability, but this summer he has polished his game and became a defensive threat as well as offensively.  His family has instilled strong values such as honestly, accountability and trustworthiness that make Josh an outstanding young man.  He is very polite and respectful which are qualities that are not particularly common this day and age.  He is very close to his family and spends a lot of his free time with his grandparents who have been a big impact in molding him into a great kid.  His dad is an extremely hard worker.  He recently added on a room to provide more space for his family and was working on this room at night after putting in a full days work.  I believe Josh has become such a quality young man and hard worker because of the example his dad has set for him and his brothers.  I also believe his mom's kind, nurturing manner has had an impact on his behavior.  At School I have received many compliments on his courteousness and how he carries himself.  People like to be around Josh and he is looked up to by many of our younger players' as a role model.  Josh has a bright future ahead of him and will be a success at whatever he chooses to pursue.  I am extremely proud of his accomplishments such as his invitation to the Power Showcase, Division 1 Scholarship to Washington State, but even more the exceptional young man he has become. Players like Josh make my job rewarding."
